This may have been one of those rare cases where the hotel itself determined the choice to visit the city. When my husband brought up the idea of seeing the Dolomites on our trip to Italy, I quickly scanned some of my favorite resources and decided that Parkhotel Mondschein in Bolzano was perfect for our adventure.

Bolzano, while not just being a gateway to the Dolomites, is beautifully situated in the South Tyrol region of Italy, right on the border of Austria, offering visitors a rich mix of cuisine, architecture, and language. In Bolzano, German and Italian is widely spoken and you are able to stroll around the town with the choice for pizza for lunch, and Tyrolean Käseknödel for dinner.

We arrived from Verona around lunchtime, dropped off bags, and went for a bite in town. Although you do not need a car in Bolzano, we still rented one for driving to the Dolomites and went to pick that up at the station through a local company. Parkhotel Mondschein felt like it was just heating up for the season, especially with their newly built pool. Their bar, Luna, is incredibly designed as well as their sauna, gym, and daily yoga amenities are great additions for those who desire a health-centered getaway.

After lunch, we waited for check-in in their garden which is also serviced by Luna Bar. The property is an urban oasis, surrounded by rolling hills, quiet streets, and views of the cable car. However, just a short stroll will have you in the city centre in no time.

We were in for a surprise, as we were upgraded to a Double Balcony Room, which faced the vineyards and mountains. The rooms have an old-world charm. Brass details, walnut furniture, suede-like headboards, pops of color from curtain tassels, and lovely brown trim on other details like their walls and sconces.

This hotel is special because of their ability to bring new life into a 14th century building. While the majority of the renovation took place in 1890 with nods to the Belle Époque style, you will see touches that reflect the midcentury styling of the 1950s-60s. Although you sense the elegance of the old world here, this is delightfully balanced with contemporary minimalism, letting the park and surroundings of Bolzano shine.

As for the hotel’s culinary offerings, the most memorable part that stands out is the breakfast buffet; full of fresh juices, cheeses, bread, and other creative hot dishes not found in traditional hotels, like crêpes, a rich yogi porridge and a delicious, baked-in version of bacon and eggs. Something to note about this region is that you will also find a countless number of local wines, many of the Lagrein variety that is native to the region. The bar is open until midnight for those who fancy a little something to round out the day’s activities.

Overall, I highly recommend Mondschein for a specific type of traveler: one who appreciates subtle details, wellness, and relaxation. This is the type of hotel where you’d want to enjoy the grounds, daily yoga, the bar, restaurant, and gym facilities, not just be cooped up in your room, although very quaint. This traveler will enjoy their time solo, with a romantic companion, or even with small children that like being outside and walking around the town. The hotel covers 50% of the parking fee in the structure, and if you’re lucky, you can also park your vehicle on the street outside and pay by the hour using the machine. Like I said, you do not need a car as this hotel is a short walk away from the train station.
